When dressing a stage, it is important that the textiles used are high quality, flame retardant and easy and quick to install. Good things to look out for, but one major thing is often overlooked. Just how sustainable and environmentally friendly are the average stage skirts and deco moltons? And how can we ensure that we pick the better option?
Environmental impact of textile production
It comes to no one’s surprise that recycling and reusing materials is almost always the better option, the contrast in environmental impact between producing virgin cotton and recycled cotton is significant. The production of one virgin cotton T-shirt for example uses 2700 liters of drinking water, which amounts to a shocking thirteen bathtubs of water. The EU parliament also has calculated that about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the production of clothes and shoes. Which is more than all international flights and shipping combined! Using recycled cotton yarns in manufacturing has been proven to save thousands of liters of water and causes a significant drop in CO2 emissions and energy consumption.
The Global Recycle Standard
The sustainability of various materials can be checked through specific labels and certifications, such as the Global Recycle Standard (GRS). The GRS standard was created by the Textile Exchange and aims to promote the use of recycled materials in every stage of manufacturing. Whenever a company uses at least 20% recycled materials in their products and also follows several other standards, they qualify for a GRS certification. With this certification a company can show that they prioritize environmentally friendly production methods, adhere to humane labor laws and value transparency towards potential clients, among other things.
An environmentally friendly alternative
We are proud to announce that our new Deco molton range is GRS certified! Made out of 40% viscose and 60% recycled cotton, these Deco molton rolls offer an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional stage textiles. Our GRS Deco molton rolls are available in black and come in 60-meter rolls with heights of 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 cm. For customers needing non-standard sizes or more flexibility, we also offer 300 cm high rolls that can be customized in width. This allows you to select the perfect size for your project.
